Areas Around the Lake

Sleepy Hollow Lake itself provides endless opportunities for boating, swimming, waterskiing, biking, tennis, basketball, baseball, walking, and more. In addition, the Hudson River is directly adjacent to Sleepy Hollow Lake with public boat launches in both the towns of Athens and Coxsackie. To the West one of the region’s premier downhill ski areas, Hunter Mountain and Ski Windham, are only 30 minutes from Sleepy Hollow Lake. To the east Butternut Basin and Catamount in Massachusetts are about 45 minutes drive.

The Riverside towns of Athens, Coxsackie, Catskill and Hudson are filled with a rich historic past - period homes and buildings prevail. The National Historic Landmark, Olana - home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church, is a vital part of the surrounding communities’ economy and identity. Views from Olana of the Hudson River and Catskill mountains are unparalleled in the Hudson Valley.

With Albany 30 miles to the north, the Town of Hudson to the east, Woodstock and Poughkeepsie to the South and the great Catskill mountains to the West, Sleepy Hollow Lake has all the elements of great living. Metro North in Hudson puts New York City an easy and accessible two hours ride

Area attractions nearby

Did you know that the Hudson Valley has the largest concentration of nationally recognized Historic Places of anywhere in the US? The area surrounding Sleepy Hollow Lake is some of the most historically significant in the country. The  Villages of Coxsackie and Athens, the municipalities which host Sleepy Hollow Lake, are two of the last intact historic waterfront villages left on the Hudson River.

Some of the most important early American works of art and literature were created in Sleepy Hollow Lake's backyard. Thomas Cole, the Founder of America's first indigenous school of painting (The Hudson River School), resided in Catskill and his restored home is now open to the public. Olana, the home of renowned Hudson River School painter Frederic Church is directly across from Cole's house in Hudson and is considered to be one of the finest artists residences in the country.
