Public Safety

Annual Sample Collection

As part of our on-going commitment to maintaining the health of our lake, Greene County Soil and Water Dept tests our water.  The Department of Public Safety assists The Greene County Water and Soil department in conducting tests to see if the lake water had “Turned Over”. Officials from Greene County were taken out on the lake by our Public Safety personnel. During this cold Autumn day water samples were taken at numerous locations around the lake. The tests on this date showed that the lake water had not “Turned”. More tests were taken to check the water for various types of contaminates.

Lake Security Completes Zooplankton Sampling

Sleepy Hollow Lake Security assists with the annual zooplankton sampling with the equipment supplied by Cornell Biological  Field Station in Bridgeport, N.Y. Zooplankton are microscopic animals that are the first link in the lake food chain; it is eaten by many organisms, including fish, birds and mammals.

The samples are collected from three locations at different depths with a 50mm mesh net that is vertically dropped from the boat and hauled just above the lake bottom without stirring up sediment. The location is recorded on the sample bottles so that the results can be compared to the previous year's to determine the condition of the lake.
